PRODUCER: Heather Doucette
STAGE MANAGER: Paul Sowerbutts
PLOT:
It’s Only a Play by Terrence McNally is a sharp, fast-talking comedy set on the opening night of a highly anticipated Broadway play. Instead of celebrating downstairs at the lavish party, the playwright, director, producer, and a group of theatre insiders gather nervously in an upstairs bedroom, obsessively waiting for the first reviews to come in. As the night unfolds, their anxieties, egos, and insecurities bubble to the surface, revealing just how much is riding on the show’s success—or failure.
Through biting wit and rapid-fire dialogue, the characters clash over art versus commerce, fame, criticism, and what it really means to “make it” in the theatre world. Old friendships are tested, ambitions are exposed, and illusions are punctured as the long-awaited reviews finally arrive. In the end, the play delivers a hilarious yet pointed reminder that, despite all the drama and self-importance, theatre is both deeply meaningful—and, as the title suggests, only a play.
