NOISES OFF!
DATE: SEPTEMBER 2017
LOCATION: Oshawa Little Theatre
PLAYWRIGHT: Michael Frayn.
DIRECTOR: Harry Lavigne
PRODUCER: Tristan Smith
PLOT:
Noises Off by Michael Frayn is a brilliantly constructed farce that follows a dysfunctional theatre company struggling to stage a mediocre sex comedy called Nothing On. The first act shows the final dress rehearsal, where everything that can go wrong does—missed cues, forgotten lines, misplaced props, and frayed tempers. From the start, it’s clear that both the play and the people performing it are hanging on by a thread.
The second act flips the perspective backstage during a performance, revealing the chaos unfolding behind the scenes—romantic entanglements, jealousies, and petty rivalries sabotage the show in real time. By the third act, the production has completely unraveled, with actors barely holding it together as the onstage performance descends into glorious disaster. Through escalating mishaps and razor-sharp timing, the play becomes a hilarious love letter to theatre, showcasing both the madness and resilience required to keep a show going at all costs.
