I just got booked for a wedding this summer. Certainly not out of the ordinary, but in this case I’m gonna have to drive 5 hours round trip to do it. That is actually very weird. I never have to do that so I asked why they didn’t find someone closer?
They said there was no one in their area who would marry them because they are gay.
That’s right. Because they are gay. Right here in Ontario. Couldn’t be more legal, and yet NONE of the religious leaders in the area – NONE OF THEM – would do it.
I get asked constantly why I have become so militantly anti-religious. It’s not that difficult to understand. This is exactly why.
I sincerely wonder if – 100 years from now – this will all seem laughable the same way it is when we look back at bloodletting as medicine. Whether homophobia in any incarnation will just be a non-issue. For a while I thought it would. My kid’s generation seemed to be WAY more accepting than my own and that made me hopeful.
I just don’t think we’ll be able to overcome this archaic thinking as long as people get their morality from religions that are amoral at the core. And that just seems to be getting stronger as the culty religious right has taken over the US government and Supreme Court over the past 30 years.
Even here the cpc party is determined to dial us back to the 50s. And right now it looks like we are joyously letting them.
